Disney Imagination: Everything We Know About Disney’s First Japan-Based Cruise Ship Coming in 2029

Disney Cruise Line is preparing to bring a whole new kind of Disney vacation to Japan. Now we finally have a name for the ship that will make it happen!

They have officially revealed Disney Imagination, the first Disney-branded cruise ship that will sail from Japan beginning in spring 2029.

Departing from Tokyo, Disney Imagination will introduce guests to a vacation experience inspired by creativity, optimism, and the power of imagination that has always been at the heart of Disney storytelling.

And there’s already one particularly exciting detail about the ship’s design: Ariel from The Little Mermaid will be featured on the stern. She’ll be found alongside Sebastian and other familiar friends from under the sea!

But Disney Imagination represents more than another addition to the growing Disney cruise fleet. It marks the beginning of a new Disney-branded cruise business in Japan, operated by the company behind Tokyo Disney Resort.

What Is Disney Imagination?

Disney Imagination is the first ship in Disney Cruise Line Japan. This will be a new Disney-branded cruise business operated by Oriental Land Co., Ltd. (OLC).

The ship is scheduled to begin sailing from Tokyo in spring 2029, bringing Disney’s signature cruise vacation experience to Japan.

The concept behind Disney Imagination centers on creativity and optimism.

Disney describes the ship as a place where families will be encouraged to embrace their imaginations and experience the storytelling that makes Disney vacations special.

From entertainment and dining to character experiences and dedicated spaces for different age groups, the ship will combine familiar elements of a Disney cruise with an entirely new setting for guests sailing from Japan.

When Will Disney Imagination Begin Sailing?

Disney Imagination is scheduled to begin sailing from Tokyo in spring 2029.

This will mark the launch of Disney Cruise Line Japan, introducing Disney-branded cruises departing from Japan.

An exact maiden voyage date has not been announced.

Disney also has not revealed the ship’s itineraries, cruise lengths, or when guests will be able to make reservations.

Ariel From The Little Mermaid Will Appear on the Disney Imagination Stern

Oh and we know who will adorn the back of the Disney Imagination!

Ariel from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Little Mermaid is going to be featured on the ship’s stern. She will be accompanied by Sebastian and friends from beneath the sea.

But there’s a playful twist to the design!

Ariel will be using her dinglehopper to create the ship’s name! How stinking cute is that?!

Is Disney Imagination Part of Disney Cruise Line?

Disney Imagination will be the first ship in Disney Cruise Line Japan, a Disney-branded cruise business operated by Oriental Land Co., Ltd.

This distinction matters because the ship will not simply be another vessel added to Disney Cruise Line’s existing U.S.-based operations.

Instead, it represents a new cruise business built around Disney’s brand and storytelling, with OLC serving as the operator.
