Guide to Monstropolis: Everything You Need to Know About the New Land at Disney World

Get ready to head to Monstropolis.

Disney has officially announced that a brand-new Monsters, Inc. Land is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. The project was first revealed during the D23 2024.

The new land will transport guests directly into the world of Monsters, Inc., allowing them to walk the streets of Monstropolis alongside familiar faces from the beloved Pixar film.

And perhaps most exciting of all, guests will finally get the chance to experience one of the most iconic moments from the movie for themselves: riding through the door vault on a suspended coaster!

Welcome to Monstropolis

The upcoming land will take place after the events of the original Monsters, Inc. film.

As fans may remember, Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan discovered that laughter generates significantly more power than screams. That breakthrough transformed the city and changed the relationship between monsters and humans forever.

Now, Monstropolis is preparing for something unprecedented.

For the first time, humans have been officially invited into the monster world to visit the city and experience life alongside its monster residents.

Disney describes the new area as a living, breathing version of Monstropolis, complete with bustling streets, recognizable landmarks, and immersive storytelling that places guests directly in the middle of the action.

The First-Ever Disney Suspended Coaster

One of the biggest highlights of Monsters, Inc. Land will be a groundbreaking new attraction inspired by the film’s famous door vault sequence.

For years, fans have dreamed of riding through the endless maze of doors seen during the film’s thrilling climax. Disney is finally making that dream a reality.

The attraction will feature several Disney firsts, including:

  • The first suspended coaster at a Disney park
  • The first-ever vertical lift on a Disney coaster
  • A ride experience inspired directly by the door vault chase scene

Guests will enter the Monsters, Inc. factory before being launched into a high-energy adventure through the iconic door warehouse, placing them right in the middle of monster mayhem.

The attraction will hoist Guests in 40 feet in the air in 4 seconds!

The Glob Theater Show

Guests visiting the new Monstropolis area will be able to experience a brand-new show at the Glob Theater, titled “Welcome to Monstropolis.”

The original production will introduce humans to the world of Monstropolis while exploring just how much monsters and humans actually have in common. And, of course, Mike and Sulley will be along to guide Guests through the experience. Of course, we see some other friends that we may remember from Monsters University.

The show will also feature a new song created by legendary songwriter Randy Newman, whose music has been an integral part of the Toy Story and Pixar storytelling legacy.

Sulley has been busy putting together a small, homespun show to welcome his human friends to Monstropolis. But Mike Wazowski has other ideas.

Our favorite one-eyed monster has a few surprises up his sleeve that he is convinced will bring down the house. With Mike involved, however, there’s always the possibility that things might not go exactly according to plan.

What could go wrong?

Restaurants in Monstropolis

A trip to Monstropolis wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the food and experiences found throughout the city. From a restaurant inspired by one of Mike and Celia’s most memorable dates to a pizza shop featuring Fear Tech’s beloved mascot, there will be plenty for human visitors to discover.

Harryhausen’s Restaurant

One of the most anticipated dining locations in Monstropolis is Harryhausen’s Restaurant, the famous spot where Mike and Celia had one of their most unforgettable dates.

A visit to Harryhausen’s will give Guests the chance to see the famed sushi chef brought to life as a new Audio-Animatronics figure. Watch as his many tentacles work their way around the kitchen, preparing delicious-looking creations worthy of Monstropolis.

And while sushi may be Harryhausen’s specialty, it won’t be the only thing on the menu.

The restaurant will feature a menu unlike anything else currently offered at Walt Disney World, giving Guests the opportunity to experience dining in a way that feels truly unique to the world of Monsters, Inc.

Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza

Of course, Monstropolis needed a pizza restaurant!

Following in the tradition of locations like Pizza Planet and PizzeRizzo, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza will be the place to go when you’re craving a slice.

The restaurant serves up Monstropolis’ top-rated pizza, making it a go-to dining stop for both monsters and visiting humans. (Top rated may be a stretch.)

The name comes from Archie, Fear Tech’s beloved six-legged mascot, who will be part of the restaurant’s story and theming.

More Monstropolis Fun

There will be more to explore in Monstropolis beyond the restaurants. From celebrating the legacy of Monsters University to picking up the perfect souvenir, Guests will find plenty of opportunities to immerse themselves in the city.

Monsters University Alumni Club

Head over to the Monsters University Alumni Club for a look at the who’s who of student clubs, fraternities and sororities from MU.

Inside the Alumni Club, Guests will also find the elite Scarers’ Club, which honors the legendary scarers who have graduated from Monsters University over the years.

The location offers another glimpse into the history and traditions of the university while giving fans plenty of Monsters University details to discover.

Scareporium

You’ll probably want to bring home a little something to commemorate your visit to Monstropolis.

The Scareporium will be the place for human tourists to find souvenirs and merchandise inspired by the city and its monster residents.

Whether you’re looking for a keepsake from your first visit or something to remind you of your favorite Monsters, Inc. characters, the shop will provide plenty of opportunities to take a little piece of Monstropolis home with you.

The Story Behind the Land

©Disney

Disney has also revealed the narrative framework that explains why humans are now visiting Monstropolis.

The experience centers around a citywide celebration known as: H.U.M.A.N. Day. Short for: Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice

The event serves as both a celebration and a cultural exchange between the monster and human worlds.

Following the discovery that laughter is a superior energy source, attitudes toward humans have shifted dramatically. As a result, city leaders have decided to open the doors between worlds and invite humans to visit Monstropolis for the very first time.

To help facilitate this historic event, the city has established a new organization known as the Department of Human Relations. This team is dedicated to helping monsters and humans better understand one another while preparing Monstropolis for its first official human visitors.

Guests entering the land become part of this story, arriving during H.U.M.A.N. Day and experiencing the city as monsters and humans come together through laughter instead of fear.

Other Locations Coming to Life

In Monsters, Inc. Land, Disney has also teased vibrant streetscapes, active industries, and detailed environments designed to make guests feel like they’ve stepped directly into Pixar’s monster-filled metropolis.

(Also, The City Frightful?! Such a cute play on The City Beautiful, which is Orlando’s motto!)

When Will Monstropolis Open?

Disney has confirmed that Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will open in phases beginning in 2027.

The first phase will bring several of the new land’s experiences to Guests, including Harryhausen’s Restaurant, The Glob Theater, Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the Monsters University Alumni Club, Scareporium and more.

However, there is an important catch: the Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster will not be ready when the first portion of Monstropolis opens. Disney says work will continue on the coaster as other parts of the land welcome Guests.

At this time, Disney has not announced a specific opening date for the Door Coaster. Some reports have suggested 2028, but that has not been officially confirmed by Disney, so we’ll be watching for more details.

Final Thoughts

Monsters, Inc. Land promises to deliver exactly what fans have always wanted: the chance to step inside the world of Monstropolis.

Between the groundbreaking door coaster, immersive city streets, beloved characters, and detailed storytelling built around H.U.M.A.N. Day, Disney appears to be creating an experience that goes far beyond a traditional themed land.

While Disney has not yet announced an opening date, one thing is certain: laughter will be powering the city when guests finally walk through those doors!
