Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Reopening May 3, 2026 With New Magical Effects

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World will reopen on May 3, 2026 following a major refurbishment. Oh and when it reopens, it will feature a 38 inch height requirement! It was previously 40 inches!
The popular Frontierland roller coaster has been closed since January 6, 2025 while Walt Disney Imagineering worked on extensive upgrades, including new glowing caverns, updated scenic effects, and enhanced storytelling elements inside the mountain. When the attraction reopens, guests will once again board the runaway mine train for “The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness”, now with new magical surprises along the way.
What’s New For Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?
While the core experience of The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness will remain the same, Disney has revealed that guests will immediately notice some exciting updates when the train first heads underground.
Deep inside the mountain, riders will now travel through stunning natural caverns filled with glowing phosphorescent pools. The scene will also feature iridescent stalagmites and stalactites that shimmer and illuminate the cavern walls, adding a beautiful new visual element to the ride.
These glowing formations are designed to make the underground section of the attraction feel even more immersive as guests race through the mysterious caverns beneath the mountain.
But while the caverns may look beautiful, something lurking within the mountain may not be quite so friendly.
Also new will be a completely new track, as well as refreshed passenger trains.
When Will Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Reopen?
The attraction is expected to reopen on May 3, 2026 at Magic Kingdom.
Once the ride returns, guests will once again be able to board their runaway mine train and race through twisting caverns, crumbling trestles, and mysterious mountains.
Because one thing is certain…
The wildest ride in the wilderness will soon be back!
