Test Track to Close for Refurbishment Beginning in June

It’s time to shift gears as Test Track will be closing for its refurbishment beginning June 17, 2024.

It was announced last year at Destination D23 that the Walt Disney World attraction would be closing (surprising many, including myself.) Disney Imagineers are gearing up to bring the next iteration of Test Track to life and are reaching back into our history for inspiration, including the original World of Motion attraction from the early days of EPCOT.

Guests also got a first look at a brand-new rendering of the attraction, as you can see above.

More details about the updates to Test Track will be shared by Disney at a later time. We also don’t have any idea how long this refurbishment should last.

The last update of the attraction was completed back in 2012. Currently Guests who experience the attraction create their own virtual concept car in the Chevrolet Design Center before buckling up in a 6-passenger “SIM Car” to take it for a spin on the track. One would guess that a big reason behind this latest reimagining is due to Chevrolet’s sponsorship contract.

Final Thoughts

With talks about taking the spirit of World of Motion and incorporating it into the future of Test Track, I actually kind of hope we see the history of cars again, but then make our way to the future with the prevalence of electric vehicles. The one thing I would REALLY like to see is the removal of creating a virtual car. I really dislike that part of the attraction and think it became dated WAY too quickly.

I would also like to see changes being made to help with the flow of the queue of this attraction. Due to the nature of the way Guests create virtual cars, it causes those waiting in the queue to have long stretches of time where they aren’t moving. One of my biggest pet peeves is when Guests don’t move in attractions. Removing this kind of bottleneck, or at least not having Guests remain stagnant for almost 5 minutes at a time would help tremendously.

Overall though, I’m excited to see where Disney and Chevrolet take this attraction as they move to the next chapter of the ride’s history.
