One of the best kept secrets, as far as dining is concerned at the Walt Disney World Resort is Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen, otherwise just known at Skipper Canteen.
This restaurant, which is found in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom is themed after the skippers found on the famous Walt Disney World attraction, the Jungle Cruise. Guests will be able to immerse themselves in the legacy of the Jungle Cruise, with “skippers” as your dining guides.
This is a place you go if you’re looking to have a fun and delicious meal that’s features Asian, South American, and African cuisine. The skippers are like the traditional, Jungle Cruise skippers and there are tons and tons of puns thrown at you during your meal. And if you want more puns, make sure you play with your Cast Member servers and let them know, you’re here for the jokes, as much as you’re here for the food.
Like I said, this is a restaurant that takes its cues from the attraction, so it’s all about adventure and puns. This table service restaurant has three different rooms – the Mess Hall, the Jungle Room, and the S.E.A. Room (a once-secret meeting place for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, for those who don’t know.)
It’s a very light-hearted dining establishment. There are lots of nods to multiple Disney adventure-themed attractions throughout the world.
So, one of the awesome things about Skipper Canteen is the frequently they have this “secret” appetizer on the menu. It’s not actually listed on the menu, but if they have it for the day, your server will let you know prior to placing your order. Otherwise, if you want it, just ask if it’s available that day.
It’s The Pao de Quiejo, otherwise known as Brazilian cheese bread! It’s served with two sauces to dip the bread in. One is a poblano cream with red pepper flakes and chimichurri sauce. The best part is mixing them together with the cheese bread. The bread itself is pillowy and yummy!
For my entree, I got the Tastes like Chicken (Because It Is). Guests receive fried chicken, served with a chili-soy glaze, Jasmine rice and a vegetable slaw. There’s a ton of chicken here and it’s nice and crispy. The chicken itself was a little dry. (But it was a breast, so I almost always find breasts to be a little dry.) Despite that, it was quite delicious!
In the past, I’ve also gotten the Hardy Har Char Siu Pork. It’s a Char Siu-glazed smoked pork chop served with rice. The pork is grilled and quite delicious. And I love the glaze that’s on top! It gives it so much flavor!
If you’re looking for a great spot for a meal, that’s usually easier to get a reservation for, then Skipper Canteen is a great place to visit! The food is solid, the entertainment is great, and there are some wonderful drinks too!
I love enjoying a late lunch here, so that way I can get a good meal, and then snack later throughout the Magic Kingdom that evening!
