The Avatar Expansion for Disneyland Will Transform Part of the Hollywood Backlot

Disney shared that an Avatar destination would be coming to Disney California Adventure and now we know where it will be located. Currently in early stages of development, this project will be located in a portion of the current Hollywood Backlot area.

To make way for this new experience though, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will be closing in early 2026.

Details, including construction timeframes will be shared at a later date.

About the Avatar Expansion Coming to Disney California Adventure

Disney has previously shared that in this Avatar expansion, Guests will be venturing further into Pandora with a brand new destination. While Pandora—The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is based on the original “Avatar” film, this new destination draws inspiration from “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” to bring Pandora to life in a brand-new way.

The new Avatar expansion will take Guests on the adventure of a lifetime. Guests will find majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora. The beauty – and danger – that come along with the journey will make for a new and thrilling excursion.

The attraction will bring all the action, excitement, and wonder of Avatar, taking Guests to the wide-open seas of Pandora. As you can see from the concept art of the Avatar expansion that’s been previously released, it appears that the attraction will be a water based attraction.
