Disney shared a while back that the Disney Treasure will have a stage show themed exclusively around the hit animated film, Moana. The show called “Disney The Tale of Moana,” will debut exclusively at the Walt Disney Theatre when the Disney Treasure sets sail officially in December 2024. This new show will feature set design and music that include elements of Pacific Islands culture. This will be an innovative production that will immerse audiences in a transformational adventure across land and sea.
The show itself will feature incredible puppets from the master puppet designer, Michael Curry. You may recognize his name. He’s the one who created the puppets that have graced the stage as part of “The Lion King” on Broadway.
One such puppet will be the massive, fiery Te Kā. This will be done on a scale Disney Cruise Line has never before produced. When Moana meets Te Kā and restores the heart of Te Fiti, the giant Te Kā puppet will shed its fiery shell and become the island goddess, Te Fiti.
Moana and Maui will perform the song “Warrior Face” for the first time in the stage show. This song is about Maui teaching Moana how to face her fears before entering the Realm of the Monsters to face Tamatoa. “Warrior Face” will join classic favorites from the popular soundtrack. Other songs will include “You’re Welcome,” “We Know The Way” and “How Far I’ll Go.”
“Disney The Tale of Moana” will begin in modern day on the fictional island of Motunui. The set design will be filled with hints of brilliant cultures of the Pacific Islands. The spirit of Gramma Tala, our narrator, will introduce her granddaughter. The show will feature vibrant dance and songs in a mix of languages including Tuvaluan, Tokelauan and Samoan. We will learn how the ocean chooses young Moana for the journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti.
In the iconic “How Far I’ll Go” scene, The Walt Disney Theatre will transform from the island of Motunui into the open ocean! Twinkling stars will swirl overhead and a giant, glowing manta ray will soar above the audience. The manta ray is the spirit of Gramma Tala. She will be there to illuminate the way for Moana on her journey to save her people.
One thing is for sure, I will absolutely make sure to check out “Disney The Tale of Moana” when I finally do sail onboard the Disney Treasure. It looks like it will be absolutely spectacular. Will you catch this show?
